During the lesson, students consider the Tri-Lakes ecosystem and factors that might have an impact on the bass population within the lake. They are presented with a scenario that begins with a letter from the Tri-Lakes Bass Association (Exhibit 5.1).

Planning and Reflecting on the Lesson to Advance Student Thinking

In preparation for this lesson, Ms. Barton and her DL science coach worked together to more clearly define the factors that might have an impact on the bass population in the lake. The focus of the conversation was on Ms. Barton’s thinking about the lesson, with the coach shifting the discussion from content to pedagogy to the learners as they consider the lesson. This cyclic pattern—content to pedagogy to learner—is referred to as the coach discussion cycle and is one of the DL routines and tools used in moving the work into the classroom.

The coach and Ms. Barton considered what would constitute “stronger” (Ms. Barton’s emphasis) explanations from the students at this juncture. With some probing and joint effort, they drafted three focus questions to help orient the students’ analyses of the data and focus their explanations:1. What can we determine about the ecosystem and changes that have occurred over the past ten years?

2. How are the organisms within the lake responding to changes within the ecosystem?

3. What has caused the changes in bass catch rates within the lake?
